In September 08 Astra decided that their then video production company’s service was too expensive and decided to video some interviews themselves using a handy-cam. Astra asked their presentation company, Orbit, to recommend someone to edit the material.
Little Orchard and Orbit are good friends of old, so we did the edit. But despite our best efforts to reconstruct bad audio, light conditions etc, and having seen the poor quality ‘DIY’ footage, Astra realised that the saving they thought they were making wasn’t worth it. The footage was binned.
Little Orchard was brought on board for the main Breast Cancer conference in Texas in December. Initially Astra asked us to film and edit 2 interviews but once there, and having seen our instant record, review and edit equipment, Astra asked us to film 9 interviews with leading international cancer doctors (called KOLs – Key Opinion Leaders), plus some open question sessions. This material was checked there and then by the doctors for accuracy, which saved Astra lots of time and money in post-production. All the interviews were ‘polished’ and finalised back in our UK studio before final delivery on time.
As a result Little Orchard was asked to reversion the material for use on touch screen technology for an exhibition in St Gallen in March 09. And Astra have asked us back to film this year’s conference in Texas too.
The moral of the story is that even though anyone can buy a camera at Dixons, DIY video is not the cost saving you think it is.
Feedback to us now – how much are you willing to pay for quality ‘head n shoulder’ interviews with your senior stakeholders, key opinion leaders or reputation builders?
