Wow, even uttering the words ‘health & safety’ can make people roll their eye… or fall asleep . This was my response when, at Little Orchard, we needed to update our health and safety training.
I thought two days of boring training where you will tell me things like ‘your first aid kit should contain safety pins, but you’re not allowed to use them’! What a load of rubbish. Well, that’s what I thought.
Then I actually attended Health and Safety in the Workplace and Emergency First Aid at work with the Salford Hundred Venture. It was unusually fun and was all easy and down to earth. The trainers made the classes’ fun and exciting, showing videos, photographs and discussing stories.
And, I will let you into a secret – health and safety is just common sense! Surely if an overhead light is swingy dangerously and on its last legs – you take it down or report it for some to take it down. If you see that someone could slip on a wet floor – you make everyone aware of it! Health and Safety departments and regulations are there to protect you and minimise risks and dangers, while you are busy meeting deadlines and charming clients! Yes, I have been converted.
I think the problem is that health and safety is boring, bogged down by rumours and bad attitudes and people are scared of the blame and claim culture of today. But, with a little bit of a positive attitude and some training videos – Health and Safety can actually be fun – or at least engaging. And you know, save people’s lives! (Who doesn’t want to be superman????)
H&S Videos work wonders
Videos can be really a useful tool when training staff, it can help to induct new staff or remind current staff on health and safety issues – letting them watch a 10 minute video can tick off a checklist, make it more enjoyable, or shock!, actually do its job and remind them which fire extinguisher to use, thus saving the day if your computer suddenly bursts into flames – and yes that has happened more times than what you think!
At Little Orchard we believe we can make your health and safety training videos enjoyable – so call me and ask for more info on our health and safety training video packages on 0845 838 7395 or corinne@littleorchardprods.co.uk
